WINTER WELLNESS

I will not be around during the holiday months, so here are some tips to keep you healthy and well:

1. REST
Sufficient sleep and relaxation time give your body a chance to regenerate healthy cells, increase immune function, and to "clean up" waste products.

2. Sufficient water intake: Take ½ your body weight ~ this number is the number of ounces of water you need per day.

3. Positive Mental Attitude

4. Regular Exercise

5. Warm Baths with:
· Essential oils such as lavender, mint, eucalyptus
· Epsom Salts

*Do not expose yourself to cold or wind after bringing your body temperature up (with the exception of contrast hydrotherapy - see below)

6. Contrast hydrotherapy – see my website for home hydrotherapies (under "Handouts", then "Home Therapies")

7. Avoid foods that weaken the immune system such as sugars (including honey, fruit juices, dried fruits, and sugar substitutes), refined carbohydrates (white flour, baked sweets), alcohol, caffeine, chocolate, and animal fats.

8. Other factors that weaken the immune system include stress, obesity, NSAIDS (aspirin, Tylenol, etc.), and Corticosteriods.

See my website under "Handouts" and "Recipes" for more healthy tips.

PRODUCE TIP:

Fruit labels with four digits indicate that the fruit was grown conventionally. Labels with five digits beginning with an "8" indicate that the food is genetically modified and labels with five digits beginning with a "9" indicate that the food is organically grown. FEATURED RECIPE
Thanks to Dr. Kate Dow

CHAI ~ this warm, comforting tea can be used as a caffeine-free alternative to coffee (though black tea can be added). The spices calm and aide digestion.

1 handful fresh chopped ginger
1 TBSP whole black pepper
1 TBSP whole cloves
1 TBSP whole cardamom seeds
1 TBSP ground cardamom seeds
4 cinnamon sticks

Add all above to 2 quarts water. Bring to a boil; then simmer for 30 minutes. Strain and refrigerate. To drink, heat with equal amounts of soy or cow's milk and add a small amount of honey. (I recommend stovetop, not microwave heating)

Wishing you all great health and a happy holiday season. I look forward to seeing you again in the New Year!
Deb Keller, ND, LM, CPM
